The Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1962 by a group of young musicians from the Sofia Opera. Their first concert in March 1962, conducted by Mihail Angelov, attracted the interest and sympathy of the Sofia audience.
Three conductors shaped the vision and sound of the orchestra: Vasil Kazandjiev (1964-1978), Emil Tabakov (1979-1988), and the current conductor Plamen Djurov, who took over the orchestra in 1988 to the present day.
"Sofia soloists" have performed over 3,000 concerts around the world. They have won awards at major festivals in Germany and France and are very popular at a number of international festivals such as San Sebastian and Santander (Spain), Zagreb and Dubrovnik (Croatia), Sita di Castella (Italy), Leuven (Belgium), Bergen (Norway).
The ensemble has toured in Europe, the USA, Japan, Korea, China, Australia, South America, and others. During these tours, they played in prestigious halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Royal Albert Hall and Barbican in London, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Gavo in Paris, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Opera Sydney, Suntory Hall and Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, the Osaka Philharmonic, and more.
Among the world names who played with the ensemble are Henrik Schering, Heinz Holliger, Daniel Saffron, Nicanor Zabaleta, Albrecht Brewinger, Patrick Galois, David Walter, Nigel Kennedy, and others.
By genre, the repertoire of "Sofia Soloists" is diverse: from baroque to contemporary music and contains more than 600 works. Their premieres are more than 100 and include works composed especially for the ensemble.
The musicians have more than 60 CD recordings and about 35 of them are available on online sites such as Amazon, ArkivMusic, Naxos.
The best of their repertoire has been released by record companies such as BMG, Denon, Decca, Harmonia Mundi, Columbia, SABA, Victor, Gega New, and others.
